In this issue of Business Voice:

Chamber to honor 'quiet giants' of community

Five residents were recognized for their outstanding contributions and dedication to the community at the First Citizen’s Banquet last February.

In 2010, that honor went to Wallace (Wally) P. Carson, Jr. Wally’s record of leadership and public service stretches over five decades.  After serving in the Oregon House of Representatives and Senate, Wally was appointed to the Oregon Supreme Court and later elected as Oregon’s 40th Chief Justice and served 14 years, making him the longest serving chief justice in Oregon history.

The Chamber also recognized Jim Monaghan, Parviz and Maudie Samiee and Chuck Swank with Distinguished Service Awards.

Monaghan was recognized by fellow community members as being a terrific father, grandfather, businessman, and community leader.  Together with his wife Lorna, Jim continues to demonstrate his good citizenship by giving back to his community and making Salem a wonderful place to live.

Parviz and Maudie Samiee, owners of local business, The Shutterbug, have contributed a great deal to the Salem community through leadership, volunteer services, and donations.  Throughout their years in the community, the Samiees demonstrated compassion as well as financial support for countless nonprofit organizations and worthy causes with no thought of personal recognition.

Local CPA Chuck Swank has been defined by his ongoing service and commitment to his community and his family.  He is known widely and respected for his extensive efforts in the community and has been deeply involved with a wide variety of key organizations.

For the second year, an Outstanding Young Professional was recognized as well.  Salem icon and former First Citizen Gerry Frank presented the award to Tom Hoffert. Hoffert’s efforts helped create the Salem Area Young Professionals, a group that helps professionals in their 20s and 30s connect with area businesses, community leaders and each other.

This year’s First Citizen’s event will take place March 2, 2012 at the Salem Conference Center. Go to salemchamber.org for details. Presented by West Coast Bank. Gold sponsors: Portland General Electric, Drs. Bud and Selma Pierce, Northwest Natural, Redhawk Vineyard and Winery, FASTSIGNS and Ticor Title; Silver sponsors: Saalfeld Griggs PC, Salem Hospital and VanNatta Public Relations, Inc.; Bronze sponsors: 6 Foot 8, LLC and Olson Florist.
